Font Licenses Explained
Every font on Studio 2am comes with a license, and the one you need depends on what you're making and how you're using it. Here's a plain-English breakdown of each type.
Desktop
The go-to for most design work. If you're making something static — a logo, a poster, packaging, social content, ads — this is your license.
You can use it for:
- Logos, branding, print, packaging, social media, and paid ads
- Client deliverables in non-editable formats (outlined vectors, PDF exports, flattened images)
- Website and app visuals where the font is rendered as an image, not live text
- Print-on-demand, if you're the one setting the type
You can't use it for:
- Embedding live font files into websites, apps, or software
- Editable templates or tools where end users can type in the font
Seats: The Desktop license is sold per seat — one seat per person who actively uses the font files. Select the number of seats you need at checkout. If you work across multiple devices yourself, one seat covers all of them — it's per person, not per device.
Client work: Delivering outlined or rasterized files to a client is covered. If your client wants to install or use the font files themselves, they'll need their own license.
Webfont
For embedding live, browser-rendered type on websites you own or control. This is the one your developer needs.
You can use it for:
- Displaying the font in live text on your own websites (headlines, body copy, menus, etc.)
- Self-hosting the font or serving it through a licensed webfont service
- Multiple domains, as long as they're all owned by you
You can't use it for:
- Websites you don't own or control (including client sites — they'll need their own license)
- Apps, games, or digital publications
- Third-party design tools or platforms
Pageview tiers: The license is tiered by monthly pageviews across your licensed domains — 10K / 100K / 1M / 10M. Select the right tier at checkout. If your traffic grows past your limit, upgrade your license.
ePub
For embedding fonts in eBooks, digital magazines, or other distributed digital publications.
You can use it for:
- Embedding the font in ePub, MOBI, or similar formats
- Secure distribution where the font can't be extracted by the reader
You can't use it for:
- Websites, apps, or games
- Print-on-demand or design tools
- On-demand ePub generation systems
Titles: The license covers one publication title, including future editions of that title. Need to use the font across multiple titles? Select the quantity you need at checkout.
App
For embedding fonts in mobile apps, desktop software, or games — anywhere the font needs to live inside a distributed application.
You can use it for:
- Embedding the font in your app bundle for distribution on iOS, Android, or desktop platforms
- All versions and updates of the same app title
You can't use it for:
- Websites or web apps
- Design tools or print applications
- Making the font accessible or extractable through the app
Apps and scale: The license covers one app title, tiered by monthly active users — 25K / 200K / 1M / 5M. If you're working across multiple apps, you'll need a license for each. Select the right user tier at checkout.
