Mock Up Help: Using smart objects within mockups

Product categoriesUpdated October 2, 2026

A Smart Object is a special layer in Photoshop that allows you to place your design into a mockup without permanently altering the original file. It automatically applies perspective, lighting, shadows, and effects from the mockup.

How to Use Smart Objects in a Mockup:

  1. Open the PSD mockup file in Adobe Photoshop.

  2. In the Layers panel, look for a layer named something like:

    • "Place Your Design Here"

    • "Your Artwork"

    • "Smart Object"
(It usually has a small icon on the thumbnail indicating it’s a Smart Object.)

  3. Double-click the Smart Object layer thumbnail. This opens a new window.

  4. Insert your design (e.g. drag in your logo, artwork, or text) into the new window.

  5. Save and close that window (File > Save or Cmd/Ctrl + S).

  6. Your design will now appear perfectly placed and styled in the original mockup.

Tips:

  • Make sure your design fits the canvas size in the Smart Object window.

  • You can edit and re-save the Smart Object anytime without damaging the original mockup.

  • If the mockup includes multiple Smart Objects (e.g. for front/back or multiple items), repeat the steps for each one.

Hope this helps, enjoy using your new Studio 2am Mock Up! 🔥❤️
